About Big Mike

Big Mike Griffin was born in southwestern Oklahoma, and at an early age developed a love of music, especially the blues, country and R & B that drifted over the Texas border in the late hours of the evening from nearby Dallas and Fort Worth. The blues permeated his soul, and that is when Big Mike decided to play the electric guitar. His fate was sealed. He studied the instrument for several years until he gained command of it, then started gigging with local musicians, and branching out regionally, playing in Kansas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Texas, especially Dallas and Fort Worth, where he fell in love with blues music, and the Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars.  After years of playing regionally, with great success, Big Mike decided to start making his own guitars, after finding the newer guitars of the day lacked craftmanship and most of all,TONE!!! After managing several succesful music stores and owning Sooner Guitar Company in Lawton Oklahoma, Big Mike decided to   branch out even further and make the move to Music City. After securing gigs with David Allen Coe, Johnny Rodriguez and other artists, plus becoming a sought after studio guitarist, he decided to follow his dream and perform the music he loved, the BLUES!

Griffin was signed to Waldoxy/Malaco Records in Jackson, Mississippi in 1991, and released three CD’s; Back on the Streets in 1992, Gimme What I Got Comin’ in 1993, and Sittin Here with Nothin’ in 1995. All three of his CD’s charted on the blues charts, and his song, Fifth of Whiskey and a Case of the Blues, was nominated for blues song of the year in 1994 at the W.C. Handy awards in Memphis, Tennessee. The CD, Sittin Here with Nothin, was nominated for blues CD of the year by the Nashville Music Awards in 1996. He also played on award winning blues recordings by other artists such as Artie “Blues Boy” White, James Peterson, and a host of others who sought his expertise on the blues. In 1993, Big Mike toured Europe with the legendary Little Milton, Denise LaSalle, Latimore and the famous Muscle Shoals Swampers, of which he is an honorary member. The tour performed at every major festival in Europe, including the prestigious North Sea Jazz festival in Holland, and the Pori Jazz & Blues Fest in Pori, Finland. After a successful six year tenure at Waldoxy/Malaco, Big Mike wanted to try something new, something fresh and original, something that involved his other passion, MOTORCYCLES!

In 1998, Big Mike and long time friend, John “Ahab” Tubbs, created Chrome Link Records to fuse blues music with the biker culture, reinforcing the need of real music for Big Mike’s fan base. The five consequent CD’s, Harley in the Rain, Twin Brothers of Different Mothers, Livin’ Large, Live at the Full Moon Saloon, and Two Lane Road, have been wildly successful in the mainstream as well as the motorcycle market. They have received critical acclaim and rotation in major markets, XM radio, and can be purchased through Custom Chrome, Jammer, or online at biker truth.com, or bigmikegriffin.com, as well as fine motorcycle shops everywhere. In 1999, Big Mike and Chrome Link Records signed a distribution deal with Chrome Specialties (one of the largest motorcycle aftermarket and parts jobbers in the country) to add Big Mike Griffin’s music to their catalogues. In 2001, Chrome Specialties presented Big Mike with a custom 10 foot long chopper christened Livin’ Large at the V-Twin product show in Cincinnati, Ohio, to promote Chrome Link Records and Chrome Specialties. Big Mike and Livin’ Large were featured in the December 2001 issue of Easyriders magazine, and his music and shows have been reviewed in Thunder Press, Blues Review, Full Throttle and many other national magazines.

2003 proved to be a breakthrough year for Big Mike and the band. They performed at the Harley Davidson 100 year birthday celebration in Milwaukee, along with Eric Burdon, Dickey Betts, the Radiators, FogHat and Confederate Railroad. He also performed in Sturgis, South Dakota at the Full Throttle Saloon for the Swift Motorcycles dealer party.

A reorganization of Global Motorsports in 2004 & 2005, led to Big Mike being sponsored by Jammer, the oldest name in aftermarket motorcycles parts. Big Mike also set a record attendance in Daytona, Florida, at the Full Moon Saloon during Bike Week 2005, and was a featured act at Easyriders Grand National Finals Rodeo in Chillicothe, Ohio.
BIg Mike is currently touring in support of his new CD "ALL MY Runnin" as well as the award winning documentary "Iron City Blues"
